New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2018: THE TOP 10 TRENDS TO KNOW ABOUT
The New York Fashion Week top trends for Spring Summer 2018 were a welcome breath of fresh air as designers mixed daywear with evening wear, and glam with casual. Anna Wintour mused that there was a playful tone to the collections, “rule-breaking, but not silly”. Experiment, deconstruct and lighten up, when it comes to the wardrobe. The theatrical delivery of the runway shows made them as much a part of the collection as the clothes. Tory Birch had models walk through a secret garden and Michael Kors set up wooden decking for models to strut in their flip flops down his catwalk, creating an ‘at the beach’ mood.
Clean lines and simple classics are still essential, but there is a mood of optimism and playfulness seen in intentional mismatching and uplifting colours. Silhouettes are relaxed and soft focusing on femininity, and sportswear gets more tailored and we will see more experimenting with materials.

Statement Satin, such as slip dresses, head-to-toe satin, block colours, skirts and pants is a fabulous look that will be everywhere for Spring Summer.
Organza soft feminine tones & provocative nudes are seen on the runways of Son Jung Wan, Victoria Beckham and Ulla Johnson.
Sequins, because the world needs more sparkle. Mixing and matching casual sequins with evening wear, as seen by Greta Constantine, adds a unique twist to an outfit. We love this beautiful floral sequinned dress by Prabal Gurung and this peach and blue dress by Carolina Herrera shows how sophisticated sequins are in muted toned down colours for a cool casual look. Whilst Monse sequinned sportswear brings a bit of glam to ringside fashion in bolder colours. Expect to see lots of sequins in all the colours of the rainbow for full on Spring Summer flower power.
4_FEMININE TROUSER SUITS
Feminine, softer trouser suits in lighter colours and floaty materials such as silky viscose and viscose wool looked as chic as can be. Jason Wu’s short sleeved pastel pink trench and stripey pastel trouser suit is ideal for Spring. A new concept is the mismatched set seen in Oscar de la Renta’s use of different colour jackets and pants.
5_ SPORTY AESTHETIC
Feminine sporty aesthetic sees activewear details teamed with usually feminine fabrics and silhouettes. Calvin Klein shows how smart sporty can be, using soft tech materials and flared volumes and Solace's sportswear brings this genre up a notch. See our blog post on the sporty feminine mega trend HERE.

6_ ASYMMETRIC SHOULDERS
Asymmetric shoulders on tops and dresses added an interesting dynamic. Dione Lee’s emerald satin off the shoulder blouse worn with green nylon trousers shows how well you can mix and match fabrics by using one bold colour. Solace’s clean lines look stylish and effortless with an off the shoulder asymmetric bodice worn under a tailored jacket. Mara Hoffman’s multicoloured dress with asymmetric shoulders embodies what SS 2018 will be all about, experimenting with silhouettes and colour.
Jumpsuits are here to stay for SS18 as the staple tailored piece for that smart relaxed mood. Derek Lam’s soft structured yellow jumpsuit shows how iconic an all in one can be for an array of occasions, be it business or cocktails. Rosie Assoulin and Ruben & Chapelle have followed suit, so to speak, with their nude tone numbers, making this a versatile wardrobe essential.
Fringed elements and specifically a mix of both fringed details and sporty garments were bright bold and beautiful. We love Calvin Klein’s bright red Moulin Rouge esque tassled dress and pom pom inspired number as well as this playful mix of fringing and sporty by Monse. Rachel Comey did monochrome fringing and Diane von Furstenberg puts her best fringe forward with this fab orange satin blouse worn with sporty trousers.
9_ BRA TOPS
Bra tops look elegant look elegant teamed with tailored pieces as seen here by Claudia Li, worn with multicoloured soft floaty slacks. Denim bra tops, that old school classic, were seen on the runways of Alexander Wang, Zadig & Voltaire and also Fenty for Puma by Rihanna with this gorgeous deep blue bra top dress. Definitely a must have item for Summer 2018 and we predict it will be just as hot for SS19, so watch this space.
Dresses, trench coats, skirts tied at the waist emphasise the silhouette in soft fabrics, looking very clean and modern. A Détacher deconstructs the concept with a belt that ties at the waist, made out of shirt sleeves. Channel your inner goddess with this stunning loose floaty baby pink dress by Adeam, highlighting the bodice and waist with multiple ties. Tracy Reese’s hot pink trench dress that loosely ties at the waist is understated perfection.
