MILANO UNICA Trend Report for AW18-19
The 25th edition of Milano Unica, the international fabrics trade fair demonstrating trends for the textile market, took place in Milan on July 11 to 13, with a focus on Made in Italy, as well as a special area for Japan and Korea.
The fabric trends for AW 18-19 will take direct inspiration from the 70’ and 80's for a dose of brassy glamour. The layout of this seasons event was displayed by merging different timeless movies together to brainstorm a world in which beauty, materials and design move in a new direction. Dynasty directed by Paolo Sorrentino, the Oscar winning Italian film director of the The Great Beauty, for example, as a design concept, was translated into next winters fashions.
Antonella Martinetto, the CEO of Remmert, the Italian textiles brand, describes it as:
"Sometimes words are not enough. Therefore pictures, sounds and colours and needed. Only in this way will we break away from 'comfortable', mediocrity and emotions will take over."
The mood is opulent and retro-vibe inspired, with a wealth of materials. Multi coloured and brash. Think zips with precious stones, embroidery, beads, crochet, taffeta, rouches, fuscia, gold and green, in line with glamorous Tribe Active mega trend.
Accessories will big. The bigger the better. The bold and the brave.
The English classic with a fulfilling twist theme was a look at Sherlock Holmes inspired fabrics and how it would look if you added director Stanley Kubrick into the equation. In other words, tweed with an edge. Tradition meets daredevil. Masculine cuts, macro tartan and windproof breathable layers. Heritage inspired emblems, British racing green and Prince of Wales checks are a major part of this theme, in line with tailoring mood of Comfort Zone Mega trend, where menswear becomes womenswear basics and understated elegance are key with clean lines and sartorial simplicity.
The Extreme Traveller merged director Tarantino with The Little Buddha movie. Think Wild Wild West textures, suedes, fringing, boucle wool, mohair and felts. The concept of the adventurous traveller, but well dressed in an elegant Buddha manner. Man in the wild never looked so dapper. Colour wise, this trend is earthy and rustic with utility accessories and survivalist fastenings to go with it, in line with nomadic-utility Step forward Mega trend.
