Milano Unica, the 22nd edition of the benchmark Italian Textile Trade show dedicated to fabrics, took place in Milan 9-11th February 2016, and anticipated four key concepts for spring-summer 2017. The Abyss, Nature and Artifice, Africa Punk, and Psycho Bit.
Africa Punk is all about Africa's tribal batik and the feeling of rebellion that characterizes urbanised Africa today, with its street art, rock and punk. Material wise, this is seen through braids, fringes, leather, patchwork and animal prints. Empire Yellow, Tango Red, Tea Rose, and Cuban Sand, are the colour forms of expression.
Nature and Artifice provides a view from above, an aerial mapping of different areas of the world showing geometric patterns of natural landscapes with precise contours, interrupted by human intervention or by urban cuts and broken concrete. Its all about mother Earth merged with modernity, with evoking landscapes and terrains. Bold 3D 'artificial' prints, mixed with natures palette of brown, khaki green, camouflage, terracotta and grey are this themes main colour trends.
Psycho Bit gives room for psychedelia linked to the world of technologies. Pinwheels of colours and mosaics, give a sense of the virtual revolution in which we are immersed. The continuous access and exposure to images created on the computer can give a sense of euphoric freedom of expression, but also to excess, distortion and discomfort. What this means is hologram graphic prints and bright colours, of blazing yellow, hot pink, lime green and a rebellious mix of them all.
The Abyss is all about the deep blue sea, waves and marine textures, where nothing stands still, like the ocean. Blues, pinks, whites. Iridescent and transparent materials. Swarovski crystals, sequins and raffia fringes and trims with evocative and luminescent textures. Everything here is extraordinary, like life itself.
